Mar. 13: Lecturer: Ritual Program

Mar. 27: Lecturer’s Program State Contest Entry

Our one program in January was indeed a “Surprise”! The new title was “An Interview With an Aspiring Ballerina”. The ballerina, named Julia Watrous, is the beautiful, talented 15 year old granddaughter of our Lecturer, Sue Pianka. Sue first gave us a brief history of ballet. We then learned that the profession is very expensive, Point shoes cost between

$90 and $170 and a professional ballerina can go through hundreds of point shoes a year! Sometimes a pair will be worn out in a single performance. A single tutu can take 90 hours to make and can cost thousands of dollars. A professional will go through 100 and 150 tutus during her career. Julia answered questions about her daily routine, then demonstrated the many different dance moves a ballerina must perfect. The piece de resistance of the evening was Julia’s performance of the “dance of the Spanish hot chocolate in the Land of Sweets “ which she performed in The Nutcracker this year. Julia had to leave right after her performance as she had an audition the next day. We understand it was successful and we certainly understand why.

And if this snow that is falling

outside our windows will just not reach the distressing, predicted depth, next time we will tell you all about fabulous February!
